Photo or Film?

This is Reiss' 1971 Spring Summer 2010 Ad Campaign, an example of a company using both photo and film for the same campaign, but which medium is more popular?

Please comment as to whether you prefer the fashion film or the still photographs.

I think I prefer the video! Much more playful and allows the viewer to interact a bit more and enjoy the collection. Images are great, but I think today times are changing and consumers want to be presented with more creative ways of advertising. Gives the designer/brand a chance to communicate a theme through their choice of music and props etc, forms more of a connection between the brand and it's consumers.
    hope this helps :)

  3. I like the video best. It's really exciting and gives the collection a cool, vibrant personality.

  4. I prefer the photographs, its more suggestive for everyone to take personal opinion on.

  5. The video is distracting - the fast cuts direct your eye to the action and the personalities of the actor/ models rather than the clothes;
If you find the music unappealing this can also be a turn off.
The still photos in pleasing or relevant settings make the clothes the primary focus of attention. Multiple shots let you see how the garment look from different angles. This would also be possible with the video if it had not be so fast cut

  6. I think I prefer the stills. i think that they make u focus more on the actual clothing rather than what that annoying model is doing...rolling around, catching flies...

  7. Surprisingly I prefer the photos.I think they convey the brand image just as well as the video (without the aid of music and movement) AND show the clothes better.

  9. im surprised but stills in this case

  10. I think both are effective but in this case I prefer the film. I think it conveys the desired lifestyle in a much stronger way. It's also nice to see how the clothing moves.

I watched it without music first time and it still looks really good

  11. Film.

It allows the viewer to appreciate the garments from every angle. I agree with the sentiments of Anonymous on 22nd February 07:52 as well.

  12. Stills for me. A video may be more engaging initially as you can add sound to grab attention, but i don't think videos have the same potential to leave a lasting memory. Still images have a lot more resonance and they can be timeless whereas video tends to be affected by trends/ageing more easily.

  13. i think i prefer the video, it is nice to have the music and see the clothes moving about. focuses a bit to much on the model maybe rather than the clothes maybe, don't like the washed out colour of the stills.
however i do like being able to rip out ads in magazines to put on my wall or in sketch books but in this case the film is better.
it may just be though that it is because it is a shiny new way of looking at things rather than just in 2d, 3d appears to be the way forward atm. not necessarily a good thing. models have to work a wee bit harder to look good in films as they are moving.
told you itd be long waazzuck!
it is good as well how u chose a shorter one cos there are some horrendously long films out there.

  14. Video worked for this season, but was awful for aw10. I think film is important as movement and life need to be seen (like the argument that clothes should not be exhibited on mannequins as they look dead, example of this was the japanese fashion exhibition at the Barbican.

Saying this, the glossy ads and shoots of a fashion mag will always reign im my mind. Focus on one element to lust after. More looks and brands can be absorbed with less time and effort. Plus easier to skip past less desirable campaigns.

    Hope it all goes well.

  17. Has to be the film! The pictures are just a tad boring!

  18. I think the video is the more visualy nicer one to look at. more to see and more to relate.

FILM! I like the vibe it gives, actually makes me want some of the outfits. Short and sweet to watch too!

  20. Still photos I think!!

I'm not a fan of the way the film has been edited, or the choice of music used.

  21. I think in general i prefer stills - less going on and can see main focus. On this occasion the fashion film works and is interesting - something that I actually want to watch but i'm not sure its something i'd look at over and over, probably just once. The music and fast movement can be a distraction. In general i like stills - they can be kept as reference, are easier on the eye and give a better understanding of the clothes themselves.

  22. I prefer to browse photography for fashion inspiration.

but the film sells a lifestyle that goes along with the outfits very much like a music video promotes a way to live. As though the clothes will make your life better!

    hope that helps ktxxx

  23. I agree with Rachael, I like browsing photos still (generally for uni use) but I love the video. I get way more excited since there's music and you can get in to the mood more, really see who they're targeting and its more fun to watch, I'd pay attention to the film more than the photograph. Plus you get to see how items move and see them from different angles.

  24. Love both but like the movement and music in the video.. Nice

  25. Photos, photos, photos. The video will too often suffer distraction from the main image of the clothes, and a temptation to create mood and attitude using moving images and sound. Photos can have the precision that a static image gives, allowing the viewer time to contemplate. A photo also has the ability to create mood and attitude with that single image; nice and seemple.

  26. I much prefer the film, it's a lot more interesting and shows how the clothes move as opposed to the stiff, lifeless photos.

  27. stills!!! Video's (such as above) can often be a lot more irritating and off putting. With stills, although they can sometimes be percieved as "boring", a good photographer can put just as much life in them as there is in that video, and also we are challenged to use our imagination more... which is a good thing, eh?

  28. Stills! You can focus on the item of clothing much more but with the video you can get lost and not appreciate fully what message is trying to come across!

  29. I prefer the stills. They look much edgier and the clothes look better.
